About the book
When a wildlife biologist drives home to the Arkansas Delta, he can’t stop reading the land, or the people who made him.
Blake Grisham was trained to watch a place closely enough to understand it: how a tree ends up where the maps swear it can’t grow, how a landscape recovers from what’s taken from it, how to tell what’s true from what’s only remembered. In Clouds, he turns that discipline on his own family: on Daddy Bob and Mee Maw, on a cotton-country town named for a vanished tree, on a road built by hand for a schoolteacher whose name is carved in nothing but a working sign.
Moving from a halibut boat in Cook’s Inlet to a fish-house in Jonesboro, Clouds is a book about inheritance and erasure: what a family hands down, and what a place refuses to forget. It is funny where grief is unbearable and exact where memory wants to lie. And it ends where every honest reckoning does: not with the road not taken, but with the one you build, name, and use.

The cover and the art inside
The cover is by Andy Bridge, the artist behind the covers of Life of Pi and Wolf Hall and more than 500 covers for the major houses: a bull in a Black Oak Gin cap, a raccoon in pearls riding high, a Blue Jay stationed where a grandson belongs, and a black oak spreading over the whole scene. Inside, Caitlin B. Alexander drew the Grisham family tree, four generations of Bob deep, and a map of the book’s whole country, from Crowley’s Ridge to the Mississippi.
About the author
Dr. Blake A. Grisham is a wildlife biologist and author from Black Oak, Arkansas, a Delta cotton town named for a tree that no longer grows there. He spent more than twenty years reading country for a living, twelve of them as a professor, and when the Lesser Prairie-Chicken’s future went under federal review, he sat on the science team that weighed it. His company, Grisham Field & Feather LLC, and its imprint, Grisham Field Press, run from Lubbock, Texas, with a field office back home on Buffalo Island. Clouds is his first book.
